Best Time to Visit: April to October is ideal for all three destinations — the dry season brings comfortable temperatures, reliable road conditions, and the best wildlife activity. Cobbold Gorge is only open during this window (April 1 – October 31). The Wildlife at Sunset Tour at Undara runs year-round, but note that Barkers Cave and the Wind Tunnel Complex are closed November to February to protect breeding bats. For the Undara Rock and Blues Festival, visit in April. For the widest range of activities at all three sites, May to August offers the most settled conditions.
Getting There: Chillagoe: 2.5 hours west of Cairns via the Kennedy Highway and Mareeba — accessible by conventional vehicle. The Billy Tea Safaris day tour departs Cairns and handles all transport. Undara Lava Tubes: 3.5 hours southwest of Cairns via the Gillies Highway and Atherton Tablelands. Accessible by car, motorhome and 4WD even after rain. The Discovery Tours 4-day tour departs Cairns and handles all transport. If self-driving, Discovery Resorts - Undara is right at the park entrance. Cobbold Gorge: 6 hours from Cairns via the Savannah Way, or 3–4 hours west of Undara via the Gulf Development Road through Mount Surprise, Einasleigh and Forsayth. Most conventional vehicles make the trip easily, including caravans. Cobbold Gorge is only open April to October — plan accordingly. For the 4-day Discovery Tours itinerary, all transport from Cairns is included.
