Port Douglas

This boutique coastal village sits where the Daintree Rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef, offering the best of both worlds with sophisticated charm. Four Mile Beach stretches along the waterfront, while Macrossan Street buzzes with restaurants and galleries. Port Douglas serves as the gateway to the Outer Reef and Low Isles, with a more relaxed pace than Cairns.

Tropical elegance meets natural wonder

Best Time to Visit: May to October offers warm days, calm seas, and minimal humidity. This is peak season, so book accommodation early. The shoulder months offer great weather with fewer crowds.

Getting There: Getting to Port Douglas from Cairns is straightforward and scenic. The 66 km drive north along the Captain Cook Highway — hugging the coast with mountains on one side and the Coral Sea on the other — is one of Australia's most beautiful coastal roads, taking around 60 minutes. Shared Shuttle Bus (most popular): Multiple shuttle companies operate daily services between Cairns Airport/City and Port Douglas. Pre-booking strongly recommended in peak season. 1 adult $57 one-way / $99 return; 2 adults $99 one-way / $198 return; children (0–12) $15 one-way / $30 return. After-hours surcharge (before 4am/after 10pm): $50 extra. Book at cairnstoportdouglasbus.com.au or Exemplar Coaches (exemplaronline.com.au, (07) 4213 3333). Exemplar also has desks in both Arrivals halls at Cairns Airport. Trans North Coastal Bus (budget option): The Trans North Cairns–Cooktown coastal service stops at Port Douglas en route. Operates Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday only (same-day return). Not luxury transport but very affordable. Adult fare ~$38.50; child ~85% off adult (approximately $5.78). The route continues through Daintree, Cape Tribulation, and Bloomfield Track to Cooktown. Book and check timetable at transnorthbus.com.au or (07) 4095 8644. Taxi / Private Transfer: Around $200 by taxi one-way. Available 24/7 — better value shared between 3–4 passengers. Private charter from $163 (1–3 passengers) one-way. Self-Drive: Renting a car from Cairns Airport (from ~$50/day) gives full flexibility. A regular passenger car is fine for Port Douglas; a 4WD is only needed if continuing to Cape Tribulation. The Captain Cook Highway drive is half the experience. From Port Douglas, most day tours include complimentary hotel pickup — reef trips, Daintree tours, and sailing excursions all typically collect guests from Port Douglas accommodation.
